If you’ve been paying attention to the frustrations we faced after the OxygenOS 12 update began rolling out for OnePlus 9 owners, there’s a new chapter. The people from android font shared a post from Google Camera Port Updates Telegram Group. In the group, it was revealed that if you are using OxygenOS 12 and want to use a GCam app, you will be disappointed to find out that you cannot.
For those who don’t know, GCam is a port of the Google Camera app that works with different devices. The developers have been porting the application since pixel devices, making the app compatible with other smartphones. By doing so, you’ll be able to take advantage of Google’s image processing on non-Pixel phones.
Unfortunately, if you are using OxygenOS 12 on your OnePlus 9 or 9 Pro, you will only be able to use the GCam app with the main camera only. Additional ultra-wide, telephoto, and monochrome sensors are inaccessible to the GCam app.
This also means that you won’t be able to use third-party camera apps such as Premium Zoom FX Camera, MX-cameraWhere Pixtica with the OnePlus 9. Considering OnePlus went so far as to pull the update from the rollout, this is just another example of how OnePlus seems to have gone astray.
The company was once considered a shining light in the Android world. Now it just looks like OnePlus is ready to go corporate and it’s going to be very good at forcing ColorOS on everyone and leaving the modding/tinkering community in the dust. Hopefully OnePlus will reverse course on the issue and at least bring back the ability to use apps of our choice.
It’ll be interesting to see how that pans out and whether the company responds, but until then, that’s just another frustrating flaw.
