iOS 10.1 Launches With Bokeh Camera Effect For iPhone 7 Plus

Apple today released iOS 10.1, which brings many changes including Portrait Camera for the iPhone 7 Plus ($ 769.99 at Verizon) .

According to the patch notes, the new portrait camera “creates an effect of depth that keeps your subject in focus while creating a beautifully blurred background.” This new feature, found in the Camera app between Photo and Square modes, shows the power of the iPhone 7 Plus’s dual camera system.

The iPhone 7 Plus has the same camera as the iPhone 7, plus a second rear camera that Apple would like you to believe is a telephoto lens (it isn’t). Either way, the new Portrait Mode feature takes advantage of the dual 12-megapixel cameras, along with “advanced machine learning” to create that blurry background effect. The feature is currently available in beta, and customers can “expect improvements in future iOS updates,” Apple said. In addition to Portrait mode, the iPhone 7 Plus’s dual camera system offers up to 2X optical zoom and 10X digital zoom for photos.
